Baptism

Baptism marks the beginning of a life-long journey with God. Baptism, sometimes called a Christening, is an outward step we make in response to God’s love for us - love which Christians believe is shown in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism is a joyful moment for all involved - it's the start of an amazing journey of faith and a special day for your family and friends.

The University Church has a lively and growing congregation. Baptisms are usually organised at 12.15pm on Sundays following the 10.30am Sung Eucharist, although they may also take place in the course of the Eucharist. We are delighted to baptise those who live in the parish, those who have become regular worshipping members of our congregation, as well as any member of the University. While serving the University is an integral part of our ministry, anyone can attend services at the University Church and become a regular worshipping member of our congregation.

Admission to Holy Communion

For some time now, children who are a little older (and subject to the agreement and support of their parents and carers) have been invited to receive communion at the University Church. This is permitted by the Church, providing they are properly prepared so that they understand, at their own level, what the sacrament represents.  First Communion is not a substitute for Confirmation but gives children a taste of something that we hope they will explore in more depth at an older age. Classes usually run through the season of Lent with first Holy Communion at Easter.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a special service in which you confirm the promises that were made when you were baptized. (If you were christened when you were a child, your parents and godparents made these promises on your behalf.) As a young person or adult, you may be ready to affirm these promises for yourself and publicly declare your faith and membership of the Church of England. It marks the completion of the rites of initiation into the Paschal Mystery - the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We tend to hold a Confirmation Service around the Feast of Pentecost each year. The Bishop of Oxford comes and baptizes those who need to be baptized and confirms those who need to be confirmed. The Bishop lays their hands on your head and says 'Confirm, O Lord, your servant, N., with your Holy Spirit'. The Bishop then anoints you with Chrism. Through this sacramental rite, we receive the gifts of wisdom and understanding, of prudence and courage, of knowledge and reverence, and the gift of wonder and awe in the presence of God (cf. Isaiah 11.2). Strengthened by these sevenfold gifts of the Spirit, our lives become through grace an authentic witness to God's love.
