Dreaming Spires Tour The University Church of St Mary the Virgin
Selected Sunday evenings in July and August | 5.30pm - 6.30pm | University Church | £21.87 per person
Join us for an exclusive after hours Tower visit; starting with a bespoke Guided Tour and completed by a stunning view - without the hustle and bustle of queuing. The University Church of St. Mary the Virgin is a superb example of church architecture from the 13th century and an iconic place to experience nearly 1,000 years of history in one building. Affording views of historic Oxford, including Radcliffe Square, the tower is the oldest part of the church still visible today; dating from 1280, it is decorated with beautifully carved gargoyles and grotesques, with 127 steps up to the top. As part of the Dreaming Spires Tour, you’ll be given access to the Clore Old Library, and your guide will accompany you up to the ‘Ringing Room’. As the spiritual heart of the oldest university in Britain, St. Mary's has witnessed the foundation of the University of Oxford and some of the most significant events in English church history. We look forward to sharing it with you!
