Congregational Life

Welcome to the University Church, a growing, vibrant and diverse community at the heart of the University city of Oxford.

For over 1,000 years, this church has served the city of Oxford as a place of inspiration, worship and Christian witness. The University of Oxford began within the precincts of this building. Today we offer a particular welcome to those who feel on the edges of faith or society. Everyone is welcome here.

The phrase 'Faith Seeking Understanding' has long encapsulated our mission and ministry. It is a phrase associated with the writings of St Anselm, who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 - 1109. His thought arises out of a deep encounter with the reality of God. He does not demur from the creative process of doubting and seeking after truth. His mind is never defensive. It is characterised by genuine curiosity.

For centuries, the University Church has been a place of public worship, sacred learning and intellectual inquiry. These elements have in turn animated our passion for justice and our care of creation. Our faith is inspired by the pattern of life embodied in the person of Jesus Christ. We seek to invite people to encounter the transforming presence of God so that they may grow together in wisdom and understanding and serve God's world.
