Welcomers & Guides

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to assist visitors at the University Church, and to participate in a unique opportunity to learn about and share the history of the city of Oxford, the University Church, and the University of Oxford. Welcomers are part of the public face of the University Church. They welcome visitors when the Church is open to visitors, and they work closely with a small and friendly team of staff. With over half a million visitors a year, there are always people to meet!

What is involved?

  • Providing a warm and friendly welcome to everyone visiting the Church 
  • Demonstrating sensitivity to the variety of visitor needs
  • Informing visitors of the services and events taking place
  • Answering questions about the church and the local area (sometimes providing brief tours of the Church interior)
  • Dealing with enquiries from visitors
  • Encouraging visitors to visit all parts of the Church, including the Shop, Tower and CafĂ©
  • Referring any visitors in need of pastoral care to the Clergy Team
  • Ensuring that those visiting the University Church are respectful of the space
  • Being vigilant regarding security and reporting any issues to the Operations Team

What we are looking for?

  • Friendly, reliably and enthusiastic people who enjoy speaking to people from all backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of other languages would be of great benefit but is not essential
  • Interest in the city of Oxford, the Church, the University and its history
  • Sympathy with the vision and mission of the University Church
  • Commitment to undertake basic safeguarding training
  • Commitment to follow our policies and procedures in order to ensure that everyone is safe

Availability

We need welcomers from Monday to Saturday and ask individuals to commit to three hour shifts, either weekly or fortnightly. Shifts are 10.00am-1.00pm or 1.00pm-4.00pm but can be flexible. A small room is available for breaks.

Livestreaming assistants

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers for livestreaming events at University Church. With a commitment of just 2 hours for each event and flexible scheduling, you will learn about operating sound systems, livestreaming technology, and event management, covering Sunday services, weddings, and various events. No prior experience needed; full training will be provided. This role is perfect for those respectful of Christian values and eager to join a friendly community, offering a unique chance to work with AV technology within an educational heritage setting. Join us to develop valuable skills and play a part in broadcasting the vibrant life of the University Church!
