Funerals and Memorial Services

Funerals

Funeral Services are held at St Mary's for anyone who lives in the parish or any member of the University. It is not necessary to have been a regular worshipper, but those who have worshipped regularly at the University Church often leave instructions with their next of kin to have the ceremony at the University Church. The service may take place prior to the committal or burial. Alternatively, the service may include the words of commendation and committal before a private committal at the Crematorium.

The Funeral Director should contact the Parish Office in the first instance. Arrangements can also be made in consultation with the relevant Chaplain for those who are members of one of the constituent colleges and permanent private halls of the University of Oxford. Memorial Services

After the death of a family member, friend or colleague, it may seem appropriate to have a service celebrating their life and work – a memorial service, or, as it is sometimes termed, a service of thanksgiving. The University Church provides a suitable setting for such a service and the clergy will provide you with every assistance in making the arrangements. Some guidance is provided below.
