Building Holiness

University Church of St Mary the Virgin
The architecture of St Mary’s reveals different visions of the sacredness of space, different ways in which we are encouraged to encounter God within it. Perhaps the most iconic feature is the seventeenth-century Virgin Porch, associated with Archbishop Laud and his desire that churches should embody the ‘beauty of holiness’, their design echoing the Temple and the ancient Christian Churches. Join us to reflect on the relationship between architecture, space, and holiness in our building’s past and in our own lives today
