The Greek word ‘Apocalypsis’ means ‘revelation’ or ‘unveiling’ - hence ‘The Apocalypse of John the Divine’ or ‘The Book of Revelation’. A book sometimes associated with disturbing images and strong emotions, it has also shaped the Western imagination in a number of curious ways. John’s vision of the new Jerusalem persists in art and literature through the centuries. By reflecting on a series of different images, we will explore the character of ‘revelation’ and ‘vision’ in art and literature. How does an artistic and literary appreciation of ‘revelation’ help us to think fruitfully about the imagination, the way we think with images, and the human search for truth? Places are limited.
