Bampton Lectures 2022 and 2023

UNIVERSITY APPOINTMENTS

Bampton Lectures 2022 and 2023

Applications are invited for two Bampton Lecturers. The Bampton Lectures, having been offered every other year for some time, will now revert to the original pattern of being delivered annually. We are therefore looking to appoint two Bampton Lecturers, one for 2022 and one for 2023.

The lectures and related seminar should be designed to reach a wide audience, beyond those with specific theological expertise. Potential lecturers are invited to think creatively about how they might deliver their lectures according to the remit of John Bampton’s will, which states that the Lectures are to be delivered ‘upon either of the following subjects: to confirm and establish the Christian Faith, and to confute all heretics and schismatics - upon the divine authority of the Holy Scriptures - upon the authority of the writings of the Primitive Fathers, as to the Faith and Practice of the Primitive Church - upon the Divinity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ - upon the Divinity of the Holy Ghost - upon the Articles of the Christian Faith, as comprehended in the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds’.

Four lectures and one seminar are to be delivered in person at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, in Trinity Term of the relevant year. The lectures will also be available online.

Applications should include a proposal for the lectures and the related seminar; a full c.v. and list of publications. Applicants should also state their availability for either 2022 or 2023.

The lecturer must be a university graduate. Previous Bampton Lecturers are ineligible to apply.

The stipend of the Lecturer, not payable until the required copies have been printed, will be not less than £4,000 plus travelling and subsistence expenses. It is a condition of the Lectureship that the lectures be printed within twelve months of their delivery and submitted to the Chair of the Bampton Committee for deposit in the Bodleian Library. Accommodation will be provided for lecturers if required.

Candidates are required to submit their application by email to:
frances.roach@theology.ox.ac.uk not later than 12 noon on Tuesday 26th October 2021.
